Awkward

I am wearing a jean jacket that used to belong to my mother and attached my faux fur collar to it. My dress is from BCBG, which I bought at about 60-80% off at a sample sale (SCORE!) and my Vans because you just can't go wrong with anything so simple and classic. I'm calling my smile in the third photo the "Chuck" smile because it looks as if only my top teeth are showing and that is exactly how the main character Chuck from the TV show "Chuck" smiles.

I'm sure we have all had our share of awkward situations and have no idea how to make them more comfortable. Recently I spent time with a fellow teenager I have known my entire life, but simply do not interact with very often. We don't have very much in common, which leads to not having much to talk about, which in turn leads to awkward silences. Since our parents are good friends, these awkward situations have become a common occurrence and I have thought of some easy ways to escape them.

1. Try to think of something easy to talk about, such as food, books, or TV. Basically think of anything everyone knows about and just let your mouth run. No matter what you think was going on during those awkward silences, the other person was most likely judging you for being awkward. Since they were already judging you, what do you have to lose?

2. Run and hide for the rest of the time you have to spend together. This one I am particularly fond of because it is the one I like to fall back on the most. Bring a book or magazine to entertain yourself as you snuggle up on a couch in another room or burrow yourself underneath clothes in a closet.

3. Completely avoid conversation. For this one you have to be confident enough to isolate yourself in plain sight. You're not hiding or avoiding people, you are simply avoiding conversation. Again, bring a magazine or a book and act as if you are completely absorbed in the item. One item that works exceptionally well for this tactic is the cellphone. Put some headphones in and even though everyone knows you're not listening to anything, you will be guaranteed silence for the rest of the time spent in the presence of other human beings.

Hope these tips will help you survive your next awkward experience!
